I am participating in the Slice of Life Story Challenge (SOLSC; #SOL16)
hosted by Two Writing Teachers.
Each day for the month of March I will be posting a "Slice of Life".
Spelling bees are inherently a game of chance. Tonight, my oldest went to the County spelling bee, having already won both his classroom and schoolwide bees. He has been visiting the library to study from the enormous dictionary, asking people to quiz him with hard words, and working to prepare for this competition.
Round 1 of the bee consisted of pretty basic words like scary, odor, and ruin...along with words I didn't even know. Not just not know how to spell, but didn't even know as words. My son got out during round 1.
The luck was not in his favor, and while he is feeling devastated right now, I couldn't be more proud.
And proud you should be! I'm impressed from afar as well. Tell your son congrats! Spelling Bees are hard and it sounds like he worked hard to prepare, but as you say, there is a "luck" factor there, depending on which word you get.
ReplyDeleteGetting as far as he did should be celebrated! Congrats to him. Our English language is such a tricky thing. I'm glad you are back to writing again! :)
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness. Our District Spelling Bee is tomorrow. I passed your slice along to my admin team as a reminder that we need to be kind to our students tomorrow. I know it's a competition, but at the very least I'd like to see our youngest students be able to stay on the stage for a couple of rounds tomorrow night! Thank you for this. We are definitely proud of our children - but these things can be very hard on them.
ReplyDeleteSpelling Bees, they make me crazy. It is totally the luck of the draw or the word! I spend our spelling bee with my nose in the dictionary because there are so many words I don't know. Your son deserves to be proud and so do you!
